If you’ve ever tried to stop smoking tobacco once and for all, you’ve most likely experienced the discomfort of nicotine withdrawal. Quitting tobacco cigarettes is hard, and that’s because nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world. In fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse says that only six percent of consumers are able to quit in a given year.
Nicotine withdrawal symptoms include intense cigarette cravings, irritability, heightened stress, headaches, sleep disturbances, sweating, chills, fatigue, anxiety, and mood swings. These symptoms are usually strongest within the first week after quitting, and like any withdrawal process, the likelihood of relapse is highest at this point.
While there are dozens of nicotine-based products, including e-cigarettes, to help reduce cravings, recent studies have pointed out that CBD is also a powerful and useful tool that helps many people kick their tobacco smoking habit. Here’s a guide with everything you need to know about how to use CBD to easily quit that nasty, unhealthy tobacco addiction.

CBD To Quit Smoking Tobacco: What The Research Says
In past years, two exciting studies on CBD to quit smoking were released, both performed by the University College London. The first one, from 2013, gave 12 dependent smokers a CBD inhaler to quit smoking and another 12 smokers a placebo inhaler to use when they had a cigarette craving. Researchers found that those using the CBD inhaler reduced their cigarette intake by 40 percent, while those using the placebo had no significant change. Researchers speculated that “drugs that alter the endocannabinoid system may be an effective treatment for nicotine addiction,” but more studies were needed.

The second one came out in May 2018. It was a double-blind, randomized study where 30 dependent smokers were given 800 mg of CBD orally or a matched placebo. They were then shown “pictorial tobacco cues” and were examined for withdrawal, cravings, heart rate, and blood pressure. In real life, these “tobacco cues” could be situations where the chance of relapsing is highest, like parties, drinking, or friends smoking. What they found was interesting: a single 800 mg dose of CBD could help reduce the “pleasantness” of cigarette cues compared to the placebo group, especially when participants had abstained from cigarettes overnight.

How Does CBD Help Me Quit Smoking Tobacco
The way CBD can help you defeat nicotine needs may come as a surprise. CBD does a lot more than offering a healthier substitute for a cigarette. For starters, CBD can engage some of the same cell receptors as antidepressant drugs, which are often used to treat nicotine addiction. This releases feel-good neurotransmitters like serotonin that help cut those cravings.
Most smokers have their triggers. Whether it’s pairing a cigarette with a morning cup of coffee or sneaking out for a few puffs when feelings of anxiety creep up at work, over time, specific images, feelings, or habits become associated with the release tobacco provides.

Unfortunately, the more these habits are rewarded by a cigarette, the more the two behaviors become connected in your brain. Soon, when a person sees a cup of coffee or begins to feel the first signs of anxiety, these triggers transform into cigarette cravings. In turn, the more that a person continues to reward these behaviors with tobacco, the more that the behavior becomes consolidated into memory. In this sense, tobacco addiction really is a vicious cycle of learned memories and reinforced behaviors.

What to look for when purchasing CBD cigarettes

First off, let us be clear that we are not telling everyone to go out and smoke. But if you are a smoker, there are cleaner methods out there. For an excellent summary of various smoking methods, their health indications, and how they interact with our body, HiVi’s latest article, “Smoking Cannabis: is it really that bad?” is a must-read. In the land of inhalants, not all products are created equal. From vapes to cannabis joints, there are a multitude of factors that should be considered when choosing your go-to products. Below you will find a break down of our CBD cigarette components and some key factors to consider for your next smoke sesh.

Rolling papers
Consumers have preferences toward various types of rolling papers due to the burn rate, taste, and how it compliments what you are specifically smoking. Wood pulp, rice, transparent cellulose, and hemp are the most common rolling papers available for most cannabis products. Often, rolling papers can be treated with chemicals and/or flavors with the purpose of controlling the burn and the taste. These additives have no business being inhaled and can do more harm than good. Bleached papers typically contain chlorine and calcium carbonate, and you are inhaling all of these chemicals when you use this type of rolling paper. Yikes! For more info on rolling papers, check out Herb’s article here.

LYTE utilizes 100% unbleached hemp paper. Though there will be chemicals present from smoking most anything, such as tar, keeping the chemical count down is very important when you choose to smoke. With unbleached hemp rolling paper, you are simply smoking a pressed version of the plant itself. There are no additives which provide a much cleaner smoke.

Many smokers do not think twice about the type of filter they are smoking from. Until recently, there have been few filter alternatives for traditional cigarettes, and consumers were used to the typical white, foam-like filter. This filter is often made of cellulose acetate, which is also used to make glasses frames and film base for photography. That doesn’t sound like something anyone would want smoke to pass through before hitting their lungs.

LYTE CBD cigarettes utilize a hemp filter. Yep, just 100% hemp. Aside from providing high-flow, this filter does not have additives and is also a more sustainable material. The hemp plant itself is gentle on the earth because of its endless uses. In terms of crops, hemp also requires much less land and water to thrive than other crops, such as cotton. Hemp filters provide both a smooth and sustainable smoke.

What’s Inside Counts
Once you’ve found a smoking product that provides a cleaner option for filters and rolling papers, the most important part is what you’re smoking. For a traditional cigarette made with tobacco, this contains the addictive stimulant known as nicotine. Please reference HiVi’s article for more helpful information on the difference between smoking tobacco and cannabis. Here, we will focus on hemp-derived cannabis. Consumers choose various cannabis strains for a plethora of desired affects. From terpene profiles to cannabinoids, the cannabis plant interacts wonderfully with our endocannabinoid system to provide a variety of health benefits ranging from a heathier sleep cycle to relaxation. But what should you consider when purchasing raw hemp flower or a product that contains hemp flower? First and foremost, only purchase product from companies that offer full transparency, meaning all ingredients are listed and a COA is readily available to you. And when you can, buy organic. Heavy metals, pesticides, and microbials are the main concerns when purchasing flower. A proper COA will have a full testing panel that provides these test results. Potency testing alone is not sufficient.

LYTE’s hemp and lavender blend is organic and sourced from USDA certified land. We proudly utilize ACS labs for stringent testing on our flower material. This information is readily available via QR code on all products, and links to a full testing panel. This panel includes potency, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbial testing.

Cannabis Creators- Kristen Stangel of LYTE™ Herbals x HeyHelloHigh

Next up in our series on womxn doing big things in cannabis is Kristen Stangel, founder of LYTE™ Herbals.

Kristen proves that even a pandemic can’t hold you back when you have a bold idea and the guts to see it through. As a queer cannabis consumer, she found a niche in the smokable CBD space to make her mark and create an inclusive community. She’s definitely one to watch! Without further ado, let’s jump into the interview.

Kristen, thanks for (virtually) chatting with us today! Tell us a little bit about you, your role at LYTE™ Herbals.

I was in healthcare for 9 years before I made the transition into the CBD industry and founded LYTE™. I was craving change, and I definitely got it. One week I was treating patients, and the next week, I was at a 300-acre hemp farm in Northern Colorado. Though it has been a wild ride, I’ve truly found a new passion. I love nerding out on the medicinal qualities of the plant, the cannabis community is so fun to be apart of, and every bit of progress you make in a start-up feels so gratifying. Being a founder, I’ve done a bit of everything. I am a master of none, but I love the challenge.

What inspired you to found the company?

My wife and I started growing our own cannabis plants a few years ago, and that was my first inspiration. However, I really have to smoke a specific strain for it to work for my body chemistry, and I tend to get too high very easily. I really wanted a smokable product that put me in my sweet spot. When I looked for these products, as a queer woman, there were very few smokable CBD brands that I resonated with. I didn’t want to hold a box covered in hemp leaves filled with bleached hemp cigarettes. I really wanted a product that would make consumers feel sophisticated and sexy.

Additionally, I noticed the lack of diverse and inclusive marketing with this type of product– So then came LYTE! We want to supply the highest quality smokable products to the underrepresented demographic. The day-to-day operations can sometimes be a bit overwhelming, but I try to make one meaningful connection each week. Whether it is with a follower, brand, or charity, these small steps will ensure we truly achieve our vision of creating a brand that stands for more than its products.

What’s a big win you celebrated at LYTE™ Herbals in 2020 so far?

Launching! We had some significant delays due to the pandemic, but we made it. When our first batch was ready to go, my whole team stood around the loading dock and smoked together. After many bumps and bruises in creating a new company, this moment felt so good.

Are there any women in the cannabis industry that you think of as mentors, or are inspired by?

Jane West. I met her in a bathroom at a conference I attended, and she was one of the keynote speakers. She had so much personality in our brief interaction, and after hearing her speak, I was so inspired by what she has done in the cannabis space. She is the definition of an innovator.

You can pick one celebrity to work on your team at LYTE™ Herbals. Who do you hire?

Jenny Lewis. She is my favorite musician, but she also has her own pre roll line. We could smoke and work and it would be pure bliss.

Where do you see LYTE™ Herbals five years from now?

I would love to see LYTE’s product line expand and for us to become a top CBD cigarette brand.

Tell us something we should know about LYTE™ Herbals (that we might not be able to find out from your website).

Since we believe in providing the cleanest smokable products on the market, we chose to source our hemp from a certified organic farm until our farmland in Colorado becomes certified organic. There are so many companies misleading consumers, and we have chosen to be incredibly transparent about our processes. Oh, and one of my very best friends, Steph Sizemore, designed LYTE.

Thanks, Kristen!
